Martin Luther King Day

With the earthquake in Haiti on my mind, I thought this quote by King was most appropriate:

"The curse of poverty has no justification in our age. It is socially as cruel and blind as the practice of cannibalism at the dawn of civilization, when men ate each other because they had not yet learned to take food from the soil or to consume the abundant animal life around them. The time has come for us to civilize ourselves by the total, direct and immediate abolition of poverty."
-Martin Luther King, Jr., Where Do We Go from Here: Chaos or Community?, 1967.

Out With The Old

The Rachel Zoe Project has been confirmed for a third season. A-MAZING (in Rachel Zoe's voice). Last year Taylor Jacobson decided to leave the show. This week it's been confirmed (twitter is a reliable news source) that she's been replaced by LA stylist Ashley Avignone.

I'll miss Tay-Tay! I love how she never got excited, refused to smile or laugh, and most importantly, never exposed both of her eyes.

But I still have Brad Goreski in his short shorts to make me laugh!

Coach Gold Janie Boot

I am still searching for a pair of shearling boots so I can move my Uggs to PT status. After the fashion crime I witnessed this week, I need to purchase replacement boots ASAP. It's to early in the year to receive a fashion misdemeanor.

I recently came across the Janie boot by Coach. The metallic gold color had me hooked within seconds.  Anyone who knows me understands my obsession with my Tory Burch metallic gold reva flats. I believe they match everything and they make me feel happy! So the Janie boot is right up my alley. I also like that they are lined with shearling to keep my feet warm and comfy.

But the verdict is still out on these. The price point isn't horrible, $138, but I think gold ballet flats are more versatile than gold shoe boot. The boots also come in natural, but they don't appeal to me. I need to check out the gold boots in the store to make a decision....I'll keep you posted.

How To Help Haiti's Earthquake Victims

As we all know, a magnitude 7.0 earthquake devastated the country of Haiti yesterday. My heart goes out to all of the people affected by the tragedy. Anyone with a mobile phone and an account with a major wireless carrier can text the phrase “Haiti” to the number 90999 and donate $10 to the Red Cross. Your donation is charged to your cellphone bill.

Haitian-born Wyclef Jean is encouraging people to text "Yéle" to 501501, which will automatically donate $5 to the Yéle Haiti Earthquake Fund, or to visit http://www.yele.org/. According to Wycelf, "The objective of Yéle Haiti is to restore pride and a reason to hope, and for the whole country to regain the deep spirit and force that is part of our heritage."

Wellness Wednesdays With Lauren: Nike + ipod

I completed a half marathon last November, and yes I'll be the first person to brag about it!  It was an amazing experience and I plan to run the same race next year.  But, I'm thinking about adding a new training accessory - the Nike + iPod Sport Kit.

The first time I heard about this accessory I didn't really "get" what it was and decided I could pass. Well, after some digging there is no way I could survive in the running world without this thing!   Not only does it keep track of your time and calories, but it tracks your distance (excellent for long runs) and allows you to download your data to the web and analyze it over weeks or months.  From there, the NikePlus website connects you with other runners for encouragement and friendly competition, across the world.  Plus, a trainer speaks to you throughout the workout to motivate you and it gives you access to music that you can program to keep you moving through tough workouts.  So, when you are feeling low, you can program your favorite song to play to pump you up.  My personal favorites right now are Untouched, by The Veronicas or Lisztomania, by Phoenix.

If you are thinking about starting to run or are already a competitive runner, I highly recommend purchasing the Nike + iPod Sport Kit.  The shoe sensor and iPod receiver are only $29.00 at Amazon.  However, I think the down side is that you have to purchase specific Nike Shoes (more $$$) and that your iPod plus receiver will not fit in a traditional arm band.   I'm thinking, even despite the extra cost, this item is a MUST for 2010.

As an added bonus - check out "The FITNESS Top 100 Workout Songs"

Sade's Looking for a Soldier

And I'm almost certain it's not the same soldier Destiny's Child was looking for.

Sade has finally returned with a new CD after 10 years! She left us in good hands with Lovers Rock in 2000 and I'm sure her new CD Soldier of Love will not disappoint.

The video for "Soldier of Love" debut today and and she looks sick (in a good way) for 50.  The video has a futuristic, military feel to it. Check it out below.
